Blue Tongue Skink

SOP Care Sheet

Enclosure

Since the Blue Tongued Skink is a larger sized lizard, we use a large neodesha cage. Reptibark bedding is used as a substrate, we have quite a few sticks and fake plants for our female to climb and hide behind. We have a humidor box in her cage for when she wants that extra boost of humidity. Mist and keep humidor container moist.

Daily Care

Spot clean cage, provide fresh water, and scrub off branches/plants. Strip cage every 3 weeks.

Lighting and Temperature

We provide a 100 watt Zoo Med Powersun bulb.  We also provide a medium sized heat pad under the cage.  Make sure the heat pad is placed under the same side as the light.  We use Zoo Med ReptiTherm® Under Tank Heater, Medium. We place the light on a timer.  The timer is set for a 12/12 light cycle.

We use an infrared heat gun to check the temperature of our cage regularly.  We try to make the "heat" side of her cage around 90 degrees F.  The "cooler" side of the cage is kept around 75 degrees F.

SOP Feed Schedule

We feed three times a week, Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays. Mondays we defrost carrots, corn and peas and place it in a bowl, we add lettuce to the mixture and mix the contents of the bowl so she can't pick out her favorites, sometimes place flower petals in the mixture. We place one spoonful of wet dog food in the corner of the bowl. On Wednesday we use the same mixture but add 6-8 mealworms. On Fridays we use the same mixture but add two thawed pinkies placed on top of salad mixture.

Can occasionally have waxworms, phoenix worms or mealworms.  Pick one of the three and can have once a week if available.
