Cornsnake
SOP Care Sheet
Enclosure
Our two Cornsnakes are housed in a reptile rack, we have both in one cage. We also have a few hide boxes in each cage. You can use anything from a store bought cave to a shoe box with a hole in it as a hide box. We also have a humidore box in each of their cages, and they love to curl up in them. We keep this in the cage to assist with humidity. Keep it moist to help with shedding. Most of our humidore boxes are made out of tupperware containers with a hole in the lid big enough for snake to slither in. We use Zoo Med Eco Earth Coconut Fiber Substrate inside of the tupperware.
Daily Care
Spot clean cage, provide fresh water, and mist humidore daily. Strip cage every 3 weeks.
Lighting and Temperature
Cornsnakes are a nocturnal snake. Due to this fact, we do not need a UVB bulb for this animal. We provide a 100 watt Zilla Heat Bulbs. We also provide a medium sized heat pad under the cage. Make sure the heat pad is placed under the same side as the light to achieve a heat gradient. We use Zoo Med ReptiTherm® Under Tank Heater, Medium. We place the light on a timer. The timer is set for a 12/12 light cycle.
We use an infrared heat gun to check the temperature of our cage regularly. We try to make the "heat" side of the cage around 90 degrees F. The "cooler" side of the cage is kept around 75 degrees F.
SOP Feed Schedule
We feed each snake 2 frozen thawed mice off tongs. Feed 1X for every 1 week. Once they reach a year old feed 1X a week for 3 weeks. Then they receive 1 week of fasting. We separate all our snakes before feeding. We also feed the snakes in a different cage than what they live in to help reduce the chance of being bit. They will not learn to associate your hands with food.
Do not hold snake for at least three days after feeding. The need to digest food properly.
